Lake Worth CRA Brownfield Program
Brownfields are sites that are generally abandoned, idled, or underused industrial and commercial properties where expansion or redevelopment is complicated by actual or perceived environmental contamination. Lake Worth CRA wins EPA Environmental Assessment Grant
On June 1, 2004 the Lake Worth City Commission adopted Resolution 32-2004 designating the entire CRA district (518 acres of land) as a Brownfield area. In May 2006, the US Environmental Protection Agency announced the award of $200,000 Environmental Assessment Grant for petroleum based potentially contaminated sites. Sites that are eligible to compete for this funding include gas stations, auto repair shops and any property in which the perceived threat of petroleum contamination is present. The Lake Worth CRA was one of only two cities in the state of Florida to receive the grant, which was used to fund environmental assessments for public, or private entities interested in redeveloping or purchasing potentially contaminated sites. The State of Florida Brownfield Program
Pursuant to the Florida Brownfield Redevelopment Act, the Florida Statutes provide for the ability of local governments to designate qualified areas as “Brownfields” for the purpose of environmental remediation, rehabilitation and economic development.
