Gateways

One of the largest infrastructure redevelopment efforts in the history of Lake Worth was completed when the Lake Worth Community Redevelopment Agency finished on its monumental “Gateways Project” on 6th Avenue South and 10th Avenue North.

The CRA completed construction of the 10th Avenue North Gateway project in late 2009 and completed construction of the 6th Ave. South corridor in early 2007.

The Lake Worth CRA engaged Kimley-Horn and Associates and Burkhardt Construction as its design/build team to transform these long-neglected entranceways into the City. Both streets offer an attractive, pedestrian-friendly corridor that will encourage positive redevelopment to the city’s western neighborhoods. The multi-million dollar project completed an overhaul of the current roadway’s appearance and includes upgrades to the existing above and below ground utilities. Project components include:

  • Beautifully landscaped medians in the center of the roadway
  • A landscaped swale along the north and the south side of the road
  • Neighborhood entry features at each of the intersections
  • New decorative street lights and sturdy windproof mast arms
  • Brick paver crosswalks at all side streets
  • Brick paver intersections at Dixie Highway and A Street
  • Undergrounding of existing electrical power lines
  • Upgrading of drainage inlets
  • Upgrading of existing water and sewer lines

The purpose of this project is to provide an inviting entranceway into the City by creating an attractive, pedestrian friendly environment for area residents and future redevelopment.

Gateways – Mixed Use Zoning

At its November 16, 2005 meeting, the Planning and Zoning Board approved a rezoning of the properties one block to the north and south of 6th Avenue South and 10th Avenue North to a special category called the “Gateways – Mixed Use District.” The new zoning category will encourage assembly of smaller land parcels to create integrated mixed use developments of professional office and residential uses that will be complementary to adjacent single family residents. The new zoning category was adopted on January 3, 2006 and is available on the City of Lake Worth’s Community Development Department page .
